Re-Animator is a horror comedy film, released in 1985 and based on the H.P. Lovecraft novel known as Herbert West – Reanimator. The film stars Jefferey Combs, Bruce Abbot, David Gale and Barbara Crompton. Dr. Herbert West discovers a serum that can reanimate deceased bodies. This was one of the more recent films I have seen. The first time I had seen this movie was about a year ago, and I loved it instantly.
The first thing that stood out to me in this film was the music. The music in this film is so great, and compliments the film’s tone so well. The score was inspired by the legendary score from Psycho, which may be why this soundtrack stuck out so well to me. The effects were also something that sticks with me throughout the film. There are some great bloody effects used in the film, as well as really cool techniques used for a beheading sequence. There are some great bloody sequences and some great body horror effects as well. This is a pretty graphic film, originally receiving an X-rating, it had to be edited down to receive an R-rating. Some pretty simple effects are also really cool to look at, such as the luminescent glow from West’s serum. Jeffery Combs’ performance as Herbert West is also one of the strongest points in the film. His performance straddles the fence between psychotic and frail scientist. The comedy in this film is very deadpan style jokes. This is another film that is so tightly made that I really don’t see many flaws with it overall. It’s obvious that this film was made by people who cared and wanted to create something special that an audience would love as much as they do.
Re-Animator is a great film to watch for the Halloween season. Do yourself a favor and find a way to watch this cult classic. With a run time under 90 minutes, you won’t regret giving this one a shot.
