Train to Busan is a 2016 Korean zombie film. The majority of the film takes place on a train heading to Busan when a viral outbreak occurs trapping the passengers on the train with the zombie outbreak. I actually only recently watched this movie and fell in love with it. This is one of the best zombie films I have ever seen, and probably one of the best of all time.
First, let’s talk about the zombies. The zombies are genuinely frightening and twist and contort in horrific ways. These are some of the best runner zombies put to film in my opinion. The ways the zombies move and behave are great and they look and feel like they are no longer human. There are several tense sequences that forces you to the edge of your seat as well. The blood, gore and makeup effects are also fantastic in this movie. Most of the main characters are extremely charismatic and likable, making you root for all of them to make it out in the end, which makes the emotional scenes towards the end of the film have a larger impact. All of the performances are fantastic, especially from the people portraying the zombies, and the young Kim Su-an who plays Su-an in the film. Kid actors are hit and miss with their performances, but Kim Su-an really knocks it out of the park. There is also a theme in the movie about being selfless, and while it may be a little on the nose towards the end, it is a good theme and plays out well through the film. The cinematography is also beautiful. There are a several long takes, which aren’t used in zombie horror films as much anymore, but it is a welcome sight in this movie. The only thing that this movie has that may be considered a flaw is that there are a couple of instances where the CGI doesn’t look the best, but it doesn’t take you out of the movie at all so I wouldn’t count off for something like that.
This is a foreign film so there are subtitles, but I promise that this film is worth the watch. Train to Busan is one of the best zombie films ever made, and it is a great film to add to any horror movie marathon.
